Children's After School Services

At Graham County Rehabilitation Center, our mission is to empower children with developmental disabilities and provide them with tools to maximize their potential. We proudly offer an extensive afterschool program specifically designed for DDD (Division of Developmental Disabilities) eligible children aged between 6 and 18.

Our afterschool program offers targeted training to help these exceptional children enhance their capabilities in different areas. We focus on:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Skills needed to take care of personal needs such as self-feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting, and personal hygiene to foster independence and self-reliance.
  • Community Safety Skills: Teaching safe navigation, traffic rule obedience, emergency recognition, and seeking help when necessary.
  • Communication Skills: Opportunities to practice expressive and receptive language skills using alternative communication methods like sign language or communication devices.
  • Social Skills: Enhancing social interactions through activities focused on sharing, turn-taking, empathetic listening, and interpreting body language.
  • Pre-vocational Skills: Introducing basic work habits, time management, following directions, task completion, and problem-solving.
  • Cooperative Play: Integrating play to encourage sharing, cooperation, teamwork, and imagination development.

We adopt a variety of effective approaches based on best practices in developmental disabilities, including the TEACCH model developed by the University of North Carolina, emphasizing structured teaching and understanding autism culture. Our specialized staff tailors each program to fit the unique needs and strengths of the children.

Summer Program at Graham County Rehabilitation Center

When the school bell rings for the summer, the learning doesn't have to stop! Our Summer Program provides continued structure, routine, and skill-building opportunities during the summer months. The program includes a range of fun, engaging activities designed to enhance skills and promote social interaction.

The Graham County Rehabilitation Center is more than just a program - it's a community. A place where children can learn, grow, and most importantly, be themselves. Come join us as we help shape the future, one child at a time. We encourage families to reach out and learn more about our afterschool and summer programs. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these extraordinary children.
